Meet Barnaby, and the people behind him

Summit Goat is a small, independent site for people planning their first big trek. We started it because the questions we kept seeing online were always the same: "Am I fit enough?", "What should I pack?", "Which boots?"

Who is Barnaby?

Barnaby is our mascot: an old mountain goat with a beard, reading glasses and strong opinions about knee care. He's fictional. The advice isn't. It comes from published trek data, training research and the experience of hikers who've been there.

How we work

Real numbers. Trek distances, ascent and altitudes come from official route sources and guidebooks, and we note when figures vary.
Honest gear picks. We say clearly when we haven't tested something ourselves. Our comparisons are based on manufacturer specs and on what independent reviews agree on.
No sponsored rankings. Brands can't pay to be listed or ranked. We earn money from ads and affiliate links, explained in our disclosure.
